The South Australian Poultry Association Inc Maintains the Breeders Directory.

Breeders listed in the Directory are registered exhibitor/breeders of the Association and have had at least three years experience breeding Poultry.

The South Australian Poultry Association Inc. will not accept any responsibility with respect to the quality of Poultry available from breeders listed in the Directory.

We hope this Directory will provide assistance and information that will enable you to choose a particular breed or variety of pure breed Poultry, one that will provide you with eggs, meat or delight you when you see it.  Clearly there is breed or species to suit all situations.

As well as listing breeders prepared to sell or take orders for their stock, we also include Breed profiles of the varieties available.  This is so you can gain a little knowledge of their character and behaviour and also a brief description of the less common Poultry species.

The benefits to those keeping Poultry are many; gentle exercise, release from stress and a new sense of purpose can all be achieved from this fascinating pastime. For those wishing for a greater challenge the quest for excellence on the exhibition bench could be pursued.

This directory is updated every two years. For further inquires, contact: -

BASIC NOMENCLATURE

The word Poultry covers numerous domesticated birds that share a significant number of similarities to be grouped together under the one family name.

The term breed describes an established group of birds related by blood and possessing the same identifying characteristics.

A Pure Breed will always reproduce offspring that have the same genetic characteristics as the parents

A variety is a subdivision of a breed varying in colour, pattern or comb but similar in all other characteristics.

A strain represents concentrations of certain characteristics that are capable of reproduction.  Many fanciers develop their own strains of the various breeds and are identifiable with the breeder. Therefore different strains of the one breed exist and while they basically fit the standard description of the breed there will be subtle differences between strains.

SIZE

The choice of size is available in the form of Large Fowl and Bantam.

Bantams are generally about one quarter to one third the size of the Large Fowl.  Some breeds are only available as Large Fowl and others only as Bantams.  No Bantam Geese or Turkeys are available and some breeds of Bantam ducks areavailable.

Bantams have the advantage of taking up less room and are easier to handle.

CATERGORIES OF BREEDS

Generally breeds are classified in Shows as Hardfeathered or Softfeathered.  This description relates to the profuseness and texture of the feathers, All Game varieties are considered Hardfeathered.

There are also subdivisions within the above categories:-
Heavy breeds- heavy bodied, docile and slow moving.  Not prolific layers but are prone to broodiness.
Light breeds:- smaller or medium sized breeds, active, good egg layers of white shelled eggs, seldom showing signs of broodiness.
