The Pekin Bantam Club of SA conducted its 4th Annual Championship show on Sunday 1st August 2010 at Maitland Yorke Peninsula in conjunction with the YPP&P Club. This year 160 birds were benched, slightly down from last year’s record number of 200 due to a few exhibitors not being able to attend & others having only average breeding seasons.
The judge Frank Sawyer from Wendouree Vic spread the major awards fairly evenly amongst the major exhibitors. The birds were well presented in good show condition & will benefit from this outing in preparation for the Adelaide Royal. Some magnificent examples of the breed were on show.
The major award of Champion Bird went to Tom Bowden from McLaren Flat for his Black Cockerel, this year exhibitors were vying for the Keith Dubber perpetual Shield, this shield was backdated to include the previous winners & judges so this is the second time Tom's name will appear on the shield as he was the judge at our inaugural show.
The Reserve Champion Bird in show went to our President Maurie Manual for his Black Hen, this is the 2nd time Maurie has exhibited the reserve champ & I'm sure this will only encourage him to take the major award next year.
Most of the exhibitors arrive at Maitland on the Saturday afternoon & place their birds in the pens & renew acquaintances with other members before heading to the Maitland Hotel where we all stay, for a quite ale or a sleep before dinner in the evening. This year we had about 25 at dinner to enjoy a very good country hotel meal, this was followed by the AGM where the current committee were re-elected, a great part about this club is that we keep the formalities to a minimum.
On the Sunday morning we are treated to a magnificent country breakfast at the hotel before heading down to the pavilion at the Maitland show grounds, at this stage some of the YP members are starting to bench their birds, the Pekin club members are encouraged to also enter birds in this show so if you have other breeds of poultry or pigeons you don't need to leave them home.
A quick tidy up of the Pekins before the judging commences at 10.30am. The shed is shut at 1.00pm whether the judging is completed or not for a 3 course lunch catered for by the YP club.
This is a great week-end & a great opportunity for anybody remotely interested in this magnificent breed the Pekin Bantam to see a top class line up of birds. Next years show will again be held at Maitland on the 1st Sunday in August. A special thank-you to the Maitland Hotel for their donation of a basket for the raffle, to our major sponsor Laucke Mills for donating vouchers for bags of feed, the Judge Frank Sawyer for his efforts & donation of specially framed prints for the Champion birds, Gavin Woods as show secretary & Max Smart for the hall & pen preparation.
